Zarotney Impresses in Return Home

Dec. 12, 2011

NEW BRITAIN - Kate Zarotney had been here before. Her Berlin Redcoats played the 2009 Class M semifinal at Detrick Gym, a game Zarotney and her teammates dominated.

Much has changed for Zarotney in between visits to CCSU's basketball floor.

She was listed as Katelyn on the roster back then, and her nickname was `Z'.

"I don't hear my nickname anymore," she said wistfully after taking the court in New Britain with her new team, Siena, against Central Connecticut Saturday afternoon. "I do miss it."

Berlin apparently misses Zarotney, as evidenced by the gaggle of Redcoats who made the trip to Central Saturday, sitting behind the Siena bench.

"I love the support," Zarotney said. "To have family and close friends here, my high school coach showed up and a couple of girls. It was great to have the support."

Those who hadn't seen Zarotney in a while saw someone who is quickly growing into a young adult as well as a significantly improved basketball player. Both of those advancements have taken time, but Zarotney's second year in New York is demonstrating that they are occurring at a rapid pace.
