Men's Soccer Drops Another Tight Decision

Sept. 16, 2011

Box Score

Siena has received solid defensive play all year long but scoring has proved to be elusive as the Saints were shutout for a third time in six matches this season, falling 1-0 to Vermont Friday afternoon at Centennial Field in Burlington, Vt. Siena falls to 2-4 with the defeat while UVM improves to 4-1.

All six of the Saints' games have been nail biters so far with each match being decided by one goal. Once again that would be the case on Friday, but unfortunately that one goal difference would not be in their favor.

Catamounts' freshman Jesse Scheirer accounted for the scoring, coming off the bench to notch his first collegiate goal in the 52nd minute. Scheirer took a pass, beat a defender and stuck a shot back across the goal to give UVM all the offense it would need.

The Saints had their chances late, but were hit with some bad luck. Siena hit the crossbar twice and a brilliant cross from right to left in the waning minutes found the head of Joe Miner, but was redirected right into the chest of Catamounts' goalie David Ramada.

Ramada made three saves in posting his fourth shutout of the season. Siena goalkeeper Jack Binks was strong again between the pipes registering five saves. Binks has held the opposition to one goal or less in five of his first six collegiate matches.

Vermont out-shot Siena 15-6 and held an 8-5 edge in corners as the Saints fell to 1-9 all-time against the Catamounts.

The Saints have nine days off before their next match which is a week from Sunday when they return to Siena Turf Field to host crosstown rival UAlbany in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
