Ryan Egan continued his strong start to the fall placing as the top Siena men's runner for a second consecutive race in leading men's cross country to an 18th place finish at the 17th Annual John "Paddy" Doyle Meet of Champions hosted by Iona College at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Samantha D'Amato was the top women's finisher for the Saints which ran 19th overall.
"This was an excellent competitive opportunity for both teams," said head coach Alison Wade. "It gave us a good sense of what we'll be facing at the end of the season. We are making a lot of progress, but we still have a lot of work to do."
The Saints showed great improvement as a team from the previous year at the Meet of Champions where collectively the team averaged 28:46/person for the top-five finishers. This season, the Saints ran almost a minute better, averaging 27:50/person which was the fastest any Siena team ran at Van Cortlandt Park since 2005.
Egan ran the men's 8K race in a time of 27:05 to finish 78th overall individually. Teammate Ian Donnelly also cracked the top-100 with a time of 27:38.
Rounding out the men's seven-runner team were Brendan Gregg (27:45), Nick Grudev (27:57), Michael Thomas (28:43), Devin Bennett (28:46) and Alex Liontas (29:23).
For the women, D'Amato and Chelsea Needham paced the squad. D'Amato ran in a time of 25:10, barely edging a strong run by Needham who was just a second behind at 25:11. Chrissy DelSanto (25:54), Meghan Yi (26:42), Caroline Bertholf (27:20) and Lia Gizzarelli (27:57) rounded out the women's field in the 6K event.
The teams return to the course on Sept. 30 at 12:15 p.m. for the Paul Short XC Run hosted by Lehigh University.
