Siena Men's Golf opened the fall season Saturday at the Cornell Invitational, playing 36 holes in central New York. The Saints sit seventh in the 17-team event, with junior John Van Vranken tied for fifth with one round left to play.

Van Vranken fired back-to-back 72's, and his even-par total is five shots behind individual leader Carter Rufe of Lafayette, who opened with rounds of 70 and 69. Next best for the Saints was senior Justin Deitz, whose three-over-par total (75-72) put him tied for 14th.

As a team, the Saints are +28, just two shots out of sixth and well ahead of MAAC opponents Canisius and Rider. Columbia leads at +2, one shot ahead of second-place Binghamton.

Play continues Sunday in Ithaca.
