Siena Falls Flat Down the Stretch

Jan. 19, 2012

Final Stats

Loyola used a game-changing 15-0 run with just over 10 minutes left, turning a 47-40 deficit into a 55-47 lead and coasted home for a 66-55 win over Siena in Baltimore Thursday night.

The Saints made eight of their first 10 shots in the second half, and appeared poised to pull off the upset after the first 30 minutes. Then the wheels fell off.

"I tried to stop it with a couple timeouts," Siena coach Mitch Buonaguro said. "They sped us up and we started making plays out of character."

The decisive run took just over three minutes, and the Greyhounds kept the pressure on, scoring seven of the next nine to take a 62-49 advantage with 3:21 left.

It marked the second straight game the Siena ran out of steam. They lost by 19 at Manhattan, but that game was tied early in the second half.

The short-handed Saints didn't make a second half substitution until Kyle Downey fouled out with 1:28 to play. Siena fell to 0-8 on the season when failing to score 60 points.

"We're relying on guys to have energy late and it's tough given the situation," Buonaguro said.

OD Anosike ran his school record double-double streak to 14 games with 15 points and 11 rebounds. The nation's leading rebounder scored six of his points early in the second half, helping the Saints turn a 29-27 halftime deficit into the seven point lead.

Dylan Cormier scored 11 of his game-high 17 points in the second half to pace the balanced Greyhounds. Robert Olson registered 13 of his 16 points after intermission, and Erik Etherly rounded out a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Downey joined Anosike with 15 points, including the 600th point of his career, but he turned the ball over a career-high nine times. Owen Wignot turned in one of his best efforts of the season in the loss, finishing with 10 points, four rebounds, three steals, two assists and no turnovers.

Siena finishes this difficult stretch of its schedule with a home game against MAAC-leader Iona Monday night.
