NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Siena Women's Basketball opens its 25th season of MAAC competition when the Saints face Iona at 2 p.m. at the Hynes Athletics Center. Fresh off the program's first winning non-conference season in 11 years, Siena (5-4) looks to build off its early success entering league action. Predicted to finish seventh in the new look 11-team MAAC, the Saints are an impressive 238-161 (.596) all-time in league action and Siena's 177 conference victories since the 1997-98 season are second only to Marist.
Playing in the program's 400th MAAC regular season game, the Saints are 13-11 all-time in MAAC lid-lifters.
Projected to finish second in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, Iona (7-2) returns all five starters and top-seven scorers from last year's team which won 20 games and earned a berth in the WNIT. Led by the nation's third leading scorer and MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Damika Martinez (26.9 points per game) and reigning MAAC Rookie of the Year Joy Adams who ranks second nationally in rebounding (13.8) and third in the league in scoring (17.2), Iona enters today's matchup having won six in a row in which the Gaels are averaging 78 points per game.
Siena leads the all-time series with Iona 37-19. However, the Gaels hold a 14-8 edge the past 10 seasons and have captured seven of the last eight meetings here in New Rochelle.
