MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Billy Baron had 21 points and 13 assists and Canisius made 15-26 3-pointers in a 93-78 win over Siena Sunday in Buffalo. The Saints trailed by as many as 28 early in the second half before rallying to within 10 with 4:51 to play.
"I was disappointed with how we started and finished," Siena coach Jimmy Patsos said. "The first four minutes of the two halves and the last four minutes are probably the most important 12 minutes of the game. We didn't execute and I take responsibility for that."
Siena got a career-high 17 points and nine rebounds from ever-improving sophomore Brett Bisping, but it wasn't enough to offset hot-shooting Canisius.
The Griffs made 10-15 three-pointers in the first half and took a commanding 57-36 lead to the lockerroom.
Dominique Raney (19) and Zach Lewis (18) each registered career-highs for Canisius which improves to 2-0 in the MAAC.
Siena got a career-high 14 points from freshman Michael Wolfe off the bench and 10 from classmate Maurice White. Leading scorer Rob Poole attempted just six shots, finishing with nine points.
Freshman point guard Marquis Wright set a career-high in assists (12) for a second straight game, registering 22 on the Western New York swing this weekend.
"We just weren't mentally ready to play," Bisping said. "We have to come out ready to play and we didn't today."
Three-point shooting was the clear difference in the game. Siena shot 56% in both halves, but made just 1-9 three-pointers, 14 fewer than Canisius.
Siena now has a 14-day break for final exams before returning home to face Hofstra December 23.
"I'm the eternal optimist," Patsos said. "We're climbing the mountain.
