Siena Cross Country ran abbreviated squads at the 19th Annual James Earley Invitational at Stanley Park in Westfield, Mass. as the Saints prepare for next weekend's final regular season meet. Junior Tom Higgins headlined the day for the Saints, finishing second overall in the men's 8K race.

"This was a good meet to give some of our athletes who has missed a race or need some extra experience to toe the line one extra time before championships," said head coach John Kenworthy.

Higgins ran in 25:57.42 to finish behind only individual champion Cole Townsend of Williams College in the 388-runner race. Travis Fairlee (27:28.93), Austin Bitzas (27:49.63) and Chad Dashnaw (28:27.65) also competed for the Saints who did not score as a team in the event by virtue of racing just four athletes.

"Tom's in the best shape of his career," noted Kenworthy. "Coming back from injury, we just took the safe route and waited until this week to get him back on the course. So I'm glad he had the chance to break the 26-minute mark and be prepared for our last regular season race at UAlbany next weekend."

Like Higgins, sophomore Kelly Pasko also used the race as a tune-up as she too returns from injury and paced the Saints with a time of 19:20.82 in the 5K. Senior Caroline Bertholf finished second on the team (20:46.98) as the Saints placed 19th of 44 teams.

"Today was another good step forward for Kelly as we try and get her some races under her belt before championships," Kenworthy added. "She led our group of women to a great day and it was nice for her to get a small 5K PR as well."

Siena concludes the regular season portion of its meet schedule Saturday at the crosstown UAlbany Invitational.
