Trey Davis scored a career-high 28 points to lead UMass past Siena 95-87 in front of 8,187 fans at the Mullins Center in Amherst Friday night. Rob Poole led four Saints in double digits with 19 points in a hard-fought loss.

"Nothing but pride for us, we played great," Siena coach Jimmy Patsos said. "It was a great learning experience and I couldn't have been prouder of the way we battled."

The game was tied 83-83 after Patrick Cole's layup with 1:26 to play, but UMass scored their final 12 points from the free throw line to edge clear for the eight-point win.

The Minutemen made 39-52 free throws, including 28-35 in the second half. Siena went 14-22 from the line.

The Saints had a chance to tie, but Poole had a three-pointer rim out before scoring on a putback to make it 86-85 with 25 seconds to play. Davis sunk two free throws on the other end, and after Marquis Wright missed on the drive, Derrick Gordon made two more to make it a two-possession game.

"I thought we played great," Poole said. "I think we rebounded well and we were right there the whole game, up five at the half and they're a really good team."

Siena led 41-36 after an entertaining first 20 minutes. Ryan Oliver and Lavon Long each had nine points in the first half for the Saints. Oliver finished with 14 points, Long had 12 and Cole added 12 in 23 minutes off the bench in his Siena debut. Siena out-rebounded UMass 43-39.

Maxie Esho scored 21 points, Gordon had 17 and Cady Lalanne finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds after a scoreless first half.

Siena opens its home season Monday night against Vermont. The CBI Championship banner will be dropped from the rafters prior to the 7 p.m. tip.
