The Moment:
Apr. 5 - Siena knocks off Fresno State 81-68 in the decisive game of the College Basketball Invitational Championship Series on campus. The victory is the 20th of the season for the surprising Saints who were picked 10th of 11 in the MAAC Preseason Poll. It also marked the first national tournament championship in the program's Division I history, and first overall since the 1950 National Catholic Invitational Tournament title.
Why we Loved it:
It didn't take long for this team to capture our hearts and reenergize the Siena faithful. After three losing seasons that culminated with a program-record tying 24 losses in 2012-13, not much was expected in head coach Jimmy Patsos' first season. But this team played with passion, and they played for each other. When the Siena students spilled onto the floor of the ARC to celebrate, it was hard to imagine a more perfect ending.
Behind the Scenes:
Sophomore Brett Bisping capped off one of the most improved seasons in all of college basketball by running away with the CBI MVP. Bisping averaged 16.2 points and 7.5 rebounds in the Saints' six CBI games, including 20 and nine in the title game.
Did You Know:
The 2013-14 season was the longest in Siena history. The November 8 opener was the earliest game the program has ever played and the April 5 title win marked the latest a Siena team has ever played. Only three games remained when Siena was done with its record 38th game - the national semifinals and championship game in North Texas.
Quotable:
"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win"
~Gandhi (This quote hung in the Siena lockerroom all season and Patsos brought it to the postgame press conference after the CBI Championship to illustrate his team's resolve.)
