Siena's volleyball team saw its historic season come to an end Friday night with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-10 and 25-5) loss to defending national champion Penn State in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. It was the sixth NCAA Tournament appearance for the Saints, but first since 2008.
"We were very excited and happy to be here," Siena coach Garvey Pierre said. "It was not easy, and we
earned the spot. Of course, that's a different level, and we played the way we could play and did our best."
Meghann Wright paced the Saints with seven kills, Jacqueline Skeena and Sonja Vasovic each had five.
"It's been a really great experience," Skeen said. "Especially my senior year, and the history that I've had at Siena."
Haleigh Washington finished nine of her 10 swings for Penn State which is the No. 5 national seed.
The Saints hung tough in the first set, before succumbing 25-17, but Penn State took command in the second set and never looked back.
Haley Howell assisted on 19 of Siena's 22 kills and Bobbi Lin Kalama led all players with 14 digs as she has so many times this season.
The Saints end the year with a 19-15 record. They saw their nine-match win streak snapped Friday night.
Siena was picked fourth in the MAAC preseason poll, but overcame the odds to hand Pierre his fifth title in his 12 years leading the program.
