Anna Grant and
Taylor Booth had quite the homecoming Sunday as the New Hampshire natives led Siena Women's Soccer to a 2-1 win at UNH. Grant scored and Booth made eight saves as the suddenly surging Saints ran their unbeaten streak to three.
Junior Cassy Landis scored the game-winning goal in the 84th minute for Siena (3-4-1) which proved to be crucial as New Hampshire's (2-5) Brooke Murphy scored on a penalty kick just 24 seconds later.
A native of Stratham, N.H., Grant scored her second collegiate goal in the 17th minute, firing home the corner from fellow center back and sophomore Tara Sobierajski.
The Wildcats out-shot the Saints 17-7 for the match and turned up the pressure in the final stanza holding a 10-2 margin in targets. But Booth, who hails from Epping, N.H., made six of her saves in the final half as the Saints improved to 2-0-1 over the past seven days in winning their first road match of the season.
Landis netted her first collegiate game-winning goal with just 6:59 remaining to give the Saints a 2-0 lead. Freshman Kaela Mahoney found Landis just onside on the left side of the box and she fired a shot across from a tough angle just inside the far post for Siena which improved to a perfect 3-0 all-time against UNH.
On the ensuing kickoff Siena was whistled for a hand ball in the box, leading to the penalty kick tally by Murphy who has scored all four of the Wildcats' goals this year. It was just the first goal allowed in the past three matches by an improving Siena defense which had given up 14 goals in their first five contests.
Siena continues its season long three-match road trip and concludes the non-conference portion of its schedule Wednesday with a 3:30 kickoff at Vermont.
