Balanced Saints Drill Radford for First Win

Nov. 20, 2015

Final Stats

Siena picked up its first win of the season in a big way, drilling Radford 76-62 in the Bryant sub-regional of the 2 K Classic Benefiting Wounded Warrior project Friday in Smithfield, RI. Marquis Wright led four players in double figures with 21 points and Siena shot 65% in the second half to pull away for the victory.

"I think we were pretty motivated to play," Siena coach Jimmy Patsos said. "We came right out and wanted to go inside."

Siena bridged the two halves with a 24-5 to build a 44-28 lead with 16:12 to play, and led by at least seven the rest of the way.

The Saints controlled a 45-31 rebounding advantage (including 30 in the first half), and shot 22-25 from the free throw line to avenge its 76-66 loss at Radford last year. Siena has now won four of five all-time meetings between the schools.

Lavon Long scored eight straight points for Siena after Radford closed the gap to 60-51 with 5:57 left. Long finished with 13 points and tied a career-high with five assists. He has reached double digits in all three games this season and 39 times in 68 career games played.

"I'm kind of scared to talk about Lavon because he's playing so well," Patsos said. "(He's) been doing a lot of little things in the offseason and I think it's really showing up."

Brett Bisping bounced back from a two-point effort at Wisconsin Sunday with 13 points and six rebounds.

Siena also did a great job on Radford star Rashun Davis, limiting him to just two points in 25 minutes. Ed Polite Jr. came off the bench to pace the Highlanders with 13 points.

Jimmy Patsos changed the starting lineup, inserting freshman Kenny Wormley into the rotation. Wormley was solid with the ball, committing just one turnover in 20 minutes played. Ryan Oliver provided a spark off the bench with five points and six rebounds, also playing 20 minutes.

Siena shot just 28% (9-32) from the field in the first half, but still led 31-24 at break thanks to its dominant effort on the glass. The Saints made their first five shots of the second half and 17-26 field goals after intermission to finish 45% for the game.

The Saints will try to make it two in a row against the winner of Friday night's second game featuring host Bryant and Prairie View A & M.
