Nate Barry had a hat-trick by the end of the first quarter and Siena exploded for seven goals in the second quarter to race past UMass Lowell 13-9 Saturday in Massachusetts. Senior faceoff specialist Casey Dowd set a career-high with 17 ground balls in the win.

It was the first victory of the season for the defending MAAC Champions who lost at No. 4 Syracuse to start the year, and to Hobart in Queensbury last Thursday. UMass Lowell falls to 0-2 in its first Division I season.

Siena never trailed and led 11-5 at halftime after a furious finish to the first half.

The game was tied 5-5 after Jon Phillips scored back-to-back goals for UMass Lowell early in the second quarter, but Siena scored the final six goals before intermission to seize command. Six different Saints scored during the seven minute and 24 second outburst. Barry, Richie Hurley and TJ Bardsley scored three goals in a frantic 32-second spurt to start the big run.

Dowd eliminated any serious thoughts of a UMass Lowell comeback by winning 19 of 26 faceoffs, including all eight in the second half.

Junior Tommy Cordts and senior Nick Capalbo split time between the pipes for Siena. Capalbo made eight stops in the second half.

Barry finished with four goals on 13 shots to pace the Saints' offense. Ryan Mallon and Hurley scored twice, and Conor Prunty had one goal to go along with three assists. Hardsley, Jordan Barlow, Kevin Cousin and Chris White all found the back of the net for Siena.

Phillips led all players with six points, tallying four goals and a pair of assists for UMass Lowell which was playing its first ever Division I home game. The River Hawks lost their Division I opener 19-4 at Yale last week.

Siena travels south to play Mercer on Tuesday in Macon, Ga. before returning to campus to host St. John's next Saturday.
