March 21, 2015 Final Stats
Eric Berger scored the decisive goal with just 73 seconds remaining in regulation as Monmouth edged Siena Lacrosse 5-4 in West Long Branch, N.J. Senior captain Nate Barry netted a hat trick to lead the Saints.
Siena (4-4, 1-1) took a 3-1 lead at the break, with Barry accounting for all of the Saints' tallies. But Monmouth (4-3, 1-1) broke a more than 27-minute scoring drought with three third quarter goals to knot the score at 4-4 heading into the final period.
Neither team scored over the final 15 minutes until Berger's tally late in regulation as Siena was held scoreless for the final 22:29.
Junior Tommy Cordts and senior Nick Capalbo each played a half in goal, making four and three saves respectively for Siena which had its eight-game regular season conference winning streak and nine-game win streak overall against MAAC foes snapped.
Freshman attack Chris Robertson accounted for the other score for Siena which got off 34 shots, but struggled to convert in tying for its lowest scoring output since an 11-3 loss at fourth ranked Johns Hopkins on Feb. 20, 2009.
Berger and Ryan Schwartz led Monmouth with two goals apiece as the second-year program earned its first MAAC win. Garrett Conaway made 13 saves for Monmouth including seven on eight second half shots on goal, while Ryan Horsch added four groundballs and four caused turnovers for a much improved Hawks squad which defeated Big East foe Rutgers earlier this season.
Siena was limited to just 1-7 on man-up opportunities, although the Saints man-down unit was solid once again in killing off all six Monmouth extra-man advantages.
The Saints will look to bounce back Saturday when they face off at Canisius at 11 a.m. The game will be televised throughout New York on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
