Freshmen led the way for Siena Cross Country Saturday as the teams competed at the RPI Saratoga Invitational at nearby Saratoga State Park. Sarah Forman broke the program record in the freshman 5K, while the top-three men's finishers were freshmen. The women placed fifth of 21 teams at the meet, while the men came in 11th of 21 on the 6K course.

Forman finished 15th overall in her first collegiate race. Her time of 18:39.3 broke the previous freshman 5K record by nearly four seconds, which was held by now sophomore Dominica Bleichert at the same race last fall.

Junior Shannon Bauer paced the women in placing seventh overall in her first meet of 2015. Her time of 18:14.0 was just four-tenths of a second off the program record 5K time set by now senior Christie MacFarlane on the same course last season. MacFarlane finished just ahead of Forman overall, placing 14th with a time of 18:38.3.

"This was the first chance this season for our entire women's team to line up together and we largely treated it as a time trial to set a solid baseline for the rest of the year," said head coach John Kenworthy. "While we ran in perfect conditions at this meet last season as opposed to this year, we still averaged the exact same time (18:53.4) and many of our newcomers showed that they are ready to contribute which are both good signs."

Newcomers accounted for the men's top-three finishers, with Luciano Fiore leading the Saints' pack in running a 6K time of 20:07.5 to finish 43rd overall. Classmates William Randall (20:27.4) and Jack O'Hara (20:31.9) rounded out the Siena leaders.

"Today was a chance for our freshmen and some of our mid-distance specialists on the men's side to get their feet wet into racing this season," explained Kenworthy. "Although some of our key veterans did not compete, I thought there were some promising results all around. The big takeaway was that our young men got some experience in a college race and hopefully they learned a few things as we head on to some bigger benchmarks coming up as our season progresses."

The Saints' first major race of the season comes next Saturday with the Rider Invitational at Rosedale Park in Pennington, N.J. The venue marks the site of next month's MAAC Championship race and the invitational is expected to feature the vast majority of the conference's teams.

"I'm pleased with where both teams are right now," added Kenworthy. "I think both groups are excited to get to the MAAC Championship course next weekend and start to see how we stack up over the 6K and 8K distances against some of our conference rivals."
