Moment #2 - Women's Basketball Advances to WBI Title Game

Jan. 13, 2016
As we begin 2016, we take a look back at the top Siena Athletics' moments of 2015. Over the next 10 days, we will count down the Top-10 Moments of the Year, which continues today with Moment #2.

The Moment
Mar. 25 - Siena Women's Basketball continued its storybook season, defeating Mercer 65-54 at the ARC to advance to the Women's Basketball Invitational Championship Game. The Saints' two-woman bench of Symone Kelly and Emia Willingham led the way, combining for 26 points.

Why We Loved It
Hollywood would have thrown out the script, that's how unbelievable the Saints' 2014-15 season was. After winning just nine games the year before and being predicted to finish 10th of 11 teams according to the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, Siena faced even more adversity having to play its final 30 games with just seven active players. While most teams would have crumbled, the Saints never wore down or backed down, harkening to their rallying cry of "when life puts you in tough situations, don't say why me, say try me." Siena was tried and tested throughout and persevered to accomplish one of the most successful - and by far the most improbable years - in the program's 41 seasons.

Behind the Scenes
With what would prove to be their final victory during their storybook season, the Saints finished with a 13-win improvement from the previous year which ended up being tied for the second best turnaround in all of Division I (UT Arlington).

Did You Know?
With the victory, Siena became the first women's basketball team in the 34-year history of the MAAC to win three games in a single national postseason tournament and advance to a national postseason tournament championship game.

Quotable
"Great day to be a Saint," said head coach Ali Jaques. "I'm really, really lucky to have a group that's just so committed to each other and so bought in. We've got a chance to end the season with a win and there's only three teams in Division I that have a chance to do that right now and we're one of them."
