Siena Men's Indoor Track finished eighth and the women seventh at Cornell's Upstate Challenge at Barton Hall in Ithaca, N.Y. Freshman Sarah Forman posted a school record time of 5:14.33 in the women's mile, while classmate Luciano Fiore won his heat and placed ninth overall in the men's 1000-meter clocking in with a time of 2:35.76.
"It was nice to get back together after winter break, get back on the track and start racing again," said head coach John Kenworthy. "We looked at this meet as a chance to see how well winter training went and to set a baseline for the next month of racing. So the goal is to build from these performances as we move through the semester. Overall, I'm pleased with where we stand this early."
Competing in just the program's second-ever Division I Indoor Track meet and first in seven weeks, the women finished ahead of MAAC foe Canisius which was the only conference foe in the race. The Golden Griffins edged out the Saints on the men's side.
Forman finished 13th of 46 runners in the mile and was part of the Saints' 4x400 and 4x800-meter relay teams which recorded points. Senior captain Christie MacFarlane added a strong performance in the 3000-meters with a time of 10:43.36.
On the men's side, Fiore was also the Saints' top finisher in the mile with a time of 4:25.20. He led off Siena's 4x400-meter relay team which picked up three points. The Saints tallied an additional four points in the 4x800.
The Saints return to the track next week for the John Thomas Terrier Classic hosted by Boston University. The women compete Friday, with the men's competition taking place Saturday.
