Siena Volleyball took down Manhattan in a thrilling five sets 3-2 (16-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-27, 15-10). The triple threat of Briana Flagg, Sonja Vasovic and Haley Howell and notched double doubles in the victory.
Starting off the match both hoping for a victory, the conference foes exchanged points back and forth. Manhattan went on a 7-0 run to take a 12-5 lead. Right after Siena took a point, the Jaspers went on a 9-0 run for a 20-6 lead. The Saints fought back and trailed 23-14. Manhattan took the first set 25-16.
The second set started the same way as the first. Manhattan took a 14-11 lead, but that would not sit well with Siena. The Saints chipped away at the lead until they tied the set 20-20. It was that point that Siena sealed the set victory 25-21.
Using their momentum from the second set, Siena took a 12-7 lead to start the third set. The Saints would continue to dominate and hold off the Jaspers. Manhattan tried to come back, but Siena would keep them at bay and take the third set 25-22.
There were six ties and three lead changes in the fourth set as Siena looked to seal their victory and Manhattan looked to force a fifth set. The Jaspers took a 19-14 lead, but as Siena chipped away at the lead they forced errors and came back to tie the set 24-24. After tying it again 25-25 it would be Manhattan who would run away with the fourth set 27-25 to force a fifth set.
The fifth set would prove to be the biggest battle of all for the conference foes. Siena recorded an impressive .304 attack percentage and made just two errors in the set. It would be a close set, but after taking the 8-7 lead Siena would never look back as they won the set and match.
Triple threat Flagg, Vasovic and Howell led the Saints with double-doubles. Flagg had a match-high 20 kills, while Vasovic added 10. Haley Howell dished out 45 assists for the Saints. The three all recorded 10-plus digs in the victory with Flagg adding 17, Vasovic recording 11 and Howell tallying 13. Kalehua Katagiri recorded a match-high 25 digs, while Bobbi Lin Kalama added 16. Samantha Pethokoukis came out with one solo block and nine block assists as the team totaled 14.0 blocks.
Siena continues their weekend getaway as they face MAAC opponent Iona on Sunday, Oct. 2nd at 1 p.m.
