Siena Volleyball was able to hold on a take a 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 28-26) sweep from Niagara to end their Western New York trip. Siena's .300 attack percentage is the second-best attack percentage this season.
The Saints started it off early with a 4-0 lead in the first set off of three kills by Sonja Vasovic and one service ace by Bobbi Lin Kalama. Siena continued to hold off the Purple Eagles and maintained a 12-6 lead. Niagara chipped away at the lead and went on a 3-0 run to trail 24-21. However after a service error by the Purple Eagles, Siena took the first set 25-21.
After Niagara took the first point, Briana Flagg and Samantha Pethokoukis combined for five kills to help Siena take a 6-1 lead in the second set. The Saints continued to add to their lead and held a 20-11 advantage over the Purple Eagles. Niagara fought hard but a kill from Shantraie Rodriguez, Pethokoukis, two from Vasovic and in addition to a service error gave Siena the 25-17 win in the second set.
Niagara took control and went on a 9-0 run to start the third set. Siena chipped away at the lead, but behind the serving of Pethokoukis, Siena trailed just 11-8. The Saints remained just outside of the grasps from the lead throughout the set until Haley Howell got behind the line to serve. Siena trailed 20-18 then used a kill from Rodriguez and an attack error by the Purple Eagles to tie the set 20-20. From that point it would be a back-and-forth set. Siena would take the win after Niagara's ball handling error and attack error. The Saints took the third set and match 28-26.
Briana Flagg led Siena with 19 kills, while Vasovic added 10 and Pethokoukis tallied nine. Haley Howell continued to garner a match-high 44 assists. Kalehua Katagiri dished out 17 assists, while Bobbi Lin Kalama added 12.
Siena returns to the Alumni Recreation Center on Saturday, Nov. 5 as they host Iona. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
