Siena volleyball dropped their match 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-23, 25-22) to Rider. With the loss to the Broncs, Siena will either be the number five or six seed in the MAAC Tournament.
Rider (16-13, 10-7 MAAC) took a 9-5 lead in the first set, but Bobbi Lin Kalama got behind the line to serve and helped the Saints (10-17, 9-8 MAAC) go on a 8-0 run to take a 13-9 lead. There was a lot of back and forth action as the two conference foes battled for seeding in the MAAC Tournament. Siena was able to remain in control up until the end where the Broncs tied it up 21-21. Siena took that next point, but then Rider followed that up with four points of their own to take the first set 25-22.
Siena took control to start the second set. After the first two kills by Samantha Pethokoukis and Sonja Vasovic, the Saints never looked back. The Broncs would chip away at the lead, but Siena would remain in control. It would be a tight set like the first, but Siena came out on top 25-22.
With the match tied 1-1, Siena started off the third set on a 5-0 run behind the serving of Kalama. It would not be long before Rider would get themselves back into the match. They continued to exchange points back and forth and fight for the lead. Siena led 19-17 before the Broncs went on a 5-0 run to take a 22-19 lead. Siena would fight back and trail 23-22, but Rider would take the third set 25-23.
Rider wanted to close out a victory with a 2-1 lead in the match, but Siena started off on a 3-0 run. Neither team wanted to lose as they continued to fight for the seeding in the MAAC Tournament. Rider led 21-16 when Siena called a timeout. The Saints came back and fought hard to take the lead. Siena trailed 24-19 before Kalehua Katagiri stepped behind the line to serve. The Saints went on a 3-0 run before Rider took the set and match 25-22.
Briana Flagg led the offense with 19 kills, while Vasovic and Pethokoukis added 10. Haley Howell dished out 51 assists. Katagiri recorded 24 digs, while Kalama added 14 and Flagg tallied 11. Kalama notched four service aces in the loss.
Siena will face Saint Peter's on Sunday, November 13 for their final regular season match. First serve is set for 1 p.m. This match determines whether the Saints will be the five or six seed in the MAAC Tournament.
