LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena volleyball claimed it's revenge with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-17) sweep of Iona on Saturday. The Saints .312 attack percentage is the second best percentage all season, and second straight match of a .300 or better attack percentage.
The Saints (9-16, 8-7 MAAC) with Bobbi Lin Kalama serving started off the first set on a 5-0 run. Siena remained in control but it was a bit of back and forth action between the conference foes. The Saints then went on an 8-0 run behind the serving of Haley Howell. The Saints led 17-7 and continued to rack up points. Iona (5-21, 3-10 MAAC) chipped away at the lead but were unable to take the momentum away from the Saints. Siena took the first set 25-13.
There was a lot of back-and-forth action between the two MAAC foes to start the second set. Again behind the serving of Kalama the Saints took an 11-9 advantage. Siena would remain in control and hold tight to their lead. The Gaels kept the Saints playing hard as they fought to take the control away. Siena did not give up and took the second set 25-21 as they headed into the locker room.
The Saints came marching in in the third set and started off with a 6-3 lead, behind the serving of Kalama and Sonja Vasovic. Iona came back and trailed 10-9, but it was Kalama's turn to serve and she wasn't about to keep the set that close. With Kalama serving Siena went on a 5-0 run for a 15-9 lead. The Saints did not look back after that moment and took a crucial MAAC match from Iona with a 25-17 third set win.
Kalama recorded three service aces for the Saints, while Howell added two. Briana Flagg tallied a match-high 17 kills, while Samantha Pethokoukis and Shantraie Rodriguez added nine. Kalehua Katagiri notched a match-high 15 digs, while Kalama added 12. Howell dished out 39 assists.
Siena will honor their seven seniors on Sunday, Nov. 6 as they host Manhattan. Senior day ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. with the match directly following the ceremony.
