LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- Canisius opened the fourth quarter on a 5-1 run to defeat Siena Lacrosse 12-9 in the MAAC opener for both teams at Siena Turf Field. Sophomore midfielder Brian Prunty paced the Saints with his first collegiate hat trick.
Canisius (2-2, 1-0) led 5-4 at the half and 7-6 through three quarters in a tightly contested opening 45 minutes in which neither team led by more than two goals. But in the final quarter, the Golden Griffins struck for five scores in 6:33 to build a five-goal lead en route to the victory.
Sophomore attackman Chris Robertson added two goals and an assist for Siena (1-5, 0-1), which held a 47-35 advantage in shots, although Canisius harbored a 23-18 margin in shots on goal. Senior goalie Tommy Cordts made eight saves for the Saints.
Ryan McKee and Nick Tuttle both netted hat tricks for Canisius and Jeff Edwards and Connor Kearnan scored four points apiece on two goals and two assists each. Liam Ganzhorn made nine saves.
The Saints return to action Saturday when they head to Quinnipiac for a noon faceoff.
