Brian Gaffney's goal with 1.9 seconds in regulation was the difference in the Saints' 10-9 loss to Saint John's on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Storm outshot Siena 42-37 while the Saints picked up one more groundball than their opponents 28-27. Chris Robertson and Brian Prunty recorded three points apiece for the Siena. Tommy Cordts made 15 saves for Siena.
The Red Storm opened the game on a 4-0 run sparked by two goals by Jason DeBenedictis. The Saints halted the scoring flurry when Dan McAvoy connected on a pass from Chris Robertson to get the Siena on the board.
The Saints outscored St. John's 5-1 in the second quarter on goals scored by Kevin Cousin, Michael Pettit, Joe Arcarese, Mike Reilly and Brian Prunty. The scoring spurt from helped Siena pull within one going into the fourth quarter.
A goal at the 12:17 mark in the fourth knotted the game at seven and then the Saints took their first lead with 6:03 left on Jordan Barlow's first goal of the game.
Siena extended their lead to two on another goal from Barlow, this time assisted by Prunty.
With ten seconds left in the third, the Red Storm pulled to within one on another DeBenedictis goal.
St. John's tied the game with 2:47 remaining in regulation and scored the game winner with 1.9 seconds left.
The Saints will next play host to Bryant Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at 3 p.m.
