Freshman William Randall and senior Christie MacFarlane each ran personal bests in their respective races to lead Siena Outdoor Track at the Sam Howell Invitational hosted by Princeton Friday night in New Jersey. Randall ran the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:34.91, while MacFarlane completed her 5000-meter run in 17:58.89.
"We brought a select group of athletes down to these races at Princeton to chase some fast times and face some really high end competition, and they didn't disappoint," said head coach John Kenworthy. "I was especially happy to see Christie break the 18:00 barrier in the 5K for the first time. That's been a big goal of hers for a long time, and nobody has worked harder than her over the past four years."
Randall's strong time in the steeplechase is closing in on the USA Junior Nationals standard of 9:32.00 as he looks to chase that mark in the coming weeks. Siena's other two male competitors in the invitational were Travis Fairlee who finished in a time of 4:05.30 in the 1500-meter run, and Nick Cornine who completed the 5000-meter run in 15:25.89.
MacFarlane and Bauer comprised the Saints' two female participants, with both competing in the 5000-meter run. Bauer finished in a time of 17:54.63 to lead the Siena contingent.
The Saints return to the Garden State Sunday for the Rider Invitational at 11 a.m.
