Volleyball Drops Two in Virginia Tech/Radford Invitational

Siena Volleyball was swept in both matches of the Virginia Tech/Radford Invitational. The Saints first fell to tournament host Virginia Tech 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-18). Appalachian State then dominated 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-15).

Match One: Virginia Tech 3, Siena 0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-18)
In their first meeting, Virginia Tech took the win over Siena. Briana Flagg picked up her second double-double of the season with 11 kills and 12 digs.

The first set started off with a lot of back-and-forth action and the Saints looked to take down an ACC team. Virginia Tech (2-0) went on a 5-1 run that gave them a 15-11 advantage. While Siena (1-1) continued to battle, the Hokies went up 24-20 and needed just one point for the set point. The Saints would take the next four points off of three kills and one service ace from Julia Burzynski and Sonja Vasovic. Virginia Tech was able to grab the next two points for the 26-24 first set victory.

The Hokies continued their momentum from the end of the first set as they went up 15-8 in the second set. Virginia Tech wouldn't stop there and quickly took the second set 25-18 for a 2-0 advantage.

Coming back to the third set, the Hokies continued to dominate. Just like the second set, Virginia Tech took a 15-9 advantage. Siena would fight hard to rally, but the Hokies closed out the match with a 25-18 victory in the third set.

Match Two: Appalachian State 3, Siena 0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-15)
In a day of firsts, Siena fell to Appalachian State for their first meeting. Samantha Pethokoukis led the Saints with seven kills and an impressive .357 attack percentage.

The Mountaineers (2-1) quickly got things started off taking a 16-6 advantage in the first set. It was fast set as Appalachian State would not give up and Siena (1-2) was unable to get the points started. The Mountaineers took the first set 25-13.

Siena was able put themselves right back into the match in the second set. The lead would change twice and be tied three times during the second set. It was a close set until Siena put themselves within one with the score 19-20. The Mountaineers took the next five points to take the set 25-19.

Appalachian State quickly started the third set with the lead. The Saints would fight hard, but the Mountaineers went up 20-9. Siena continued to battle and chipped away at the lead. Appalachian State would take the third set and match with a 25-15 victory.

Siena travels to Cambridge, Massachusetts for the Beantown Challenge from September 2nd to September 3rd. The Saints face New Hampshire (1 p.m.) and Harvard (7 p.m.)on Friday while they battle Georgia (12 p.m.) on Sunday.
