Binghamton Tops Siena in Home Opener

LOUDONVILLE, NY - Siena Volleyball fell 3-1 (25-22, 25-16, 17-25, 25-16) to Binghamton in the program's home opener Wednesday night. The Bearcats now hold a 19-7 advantage over the Saints.

The Bearcats (4-6) opened up the first set with the first three points. While they continued to hold a 6-3 advantage, Siena (1-9) came right back into the set and tied it up 6-6. Both teams battled back and forth for the advantage in the set. Binghamton took a 21-16 lead after going on a 4-0 run. With two service aces from Bobbi Lin Kalama, a kill from Briana Flagg and an attack error by the Bearcats, the Saints came right back into the set and tied it up 22-22. Binghamton was able to nudge ahead and take the first set 25-22.

Siena began the second set with a 4-0 lead. It started similar to the first set where the teams exchanged points and were all tied up 10-10. Binghamton went on a 7-0 run to take a big 17-10 advantage. The Saints chipped away at the lead, but the Bearcats took quickly took the second set 25-16.

After coming back to the court, Siena put out a strong front in the third set. After two kills from Julia Burzynski and three attack errors by the Bearcats, the Saints took a big 13-7 lead. They could not be stopped as they continued to dominate Binghamton. With a 20-10 lead over the Bearcats, Siena closed out the set with a 25-17 victory.

Neither team was quick to jump out to a lead in the fourth set. Binghamton had a slight 16-15 advantage over the Saints, but then went on an 8-0 run for a 24-15 lead. With the match point on the line Siena was able to garner one more point but fell 25-16 in the fourth and final set.

Sonja Vasovic led the match with 15 kills, while Burzynski added 11. Haley Howell dished out 42 assists for the Saints. Kalehua Katagiri led Siena with 15 digs, while Bobbi Lin Kalama and Briana Flagg added 13 and 11, respectively.

Siena continues a four-match homestand on Saturday, Sept. 17th when they open up MAAC play against Niagara. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
