Men's Tennis opens up their 2016-17 campaign with a 6-1 victory over MAAC opponent Rider. After falling to Rider 6-1 last season, the Saints completely turned the tables on the MAAC foe.
"After a very rough season last year it was nice to get a win today the men played well and proved today that they should be competitive this season," said head coach Jeff Osborn.
The Saints started off with victories on all three doubles courts to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles. Freshman Cameron Kirkwood matched up with seniorJace Koretz for the victory at the number one court. Alessandro Saglia and freshman Geovanny Mendoza won on court two, while Peter Galante and Diego Lebron finished in up with victories on court three.
Leading 1-0 as they started singles play, Mendoza was quick to put the Saints up 2-0. Mendoza took down Levi of Rider 6-2, 6-1. Kirkwood followed closely behind with a 6-4, 6-0 victory on court one to put Siena up 3-0. After a hard-fought battle, Saglia was able to take down Chris Popso of Rider on court two 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (7-2).
Lebron fought hard on court five to help Siena go up 6-0 as he took down Rider 6-2, 4-6, 10-4. Court six proved to hold another battle between the conference foes. Galante put up a solid effort but was defeated 1-6, 7-6 (6), 10-5 as Siena took the match 6-1.
Siena will host Holy Cross Sunday, Sept. 18th at TriCity in Latham, New York. First serve is set for 12:30 p.m.
