Volleyball Opens MAAC Play With Victory

LOUDONVILLE, NY - Siena opened up MAAC play with a 3-1 (25-19, 12-25, 28-26, 25-15) victory over Niagara. This win marks the 28th win over the Purple Eagles.

Siena (2-9, 1-0 MAAC) started the first set off with the first two points. The Saints were able to hold onto the advantage as the Purple Eagles (2-11, 0-1 MAAC) fought hard to gain the advantage. The Saints went on a 5-0 run to take a 15-9 lead. That was the end for Siena as they would not let Niagara come back. The Saints locked down the first set victory 25-19.

Both teams exchanged points back-and-forth early in the second set. Niagara took the lead continued to hold on for the set. The Purple Eagles went on a 9-0 run to win the second set 25-12.

After coming back from the locker room, both teams fought hard for the advantage in the third set. Niagara took the lead 10-7, but the Saints chipped away at the lead and grabbed the lead 13-10. The set continued to be a battle for victory between the conference foes. Siena would not let go of the lead, but the Purple Eagles continued to test the Saints. Siena would be faced with three set points before taking the set 28-26.

Wanting to put this one away, the Saints came onto the court in the fourth set with the vision of victory. After some back and forth action, the Green and Gold went up 8-7 behind the serving of Julia Mumpton. Siena would never give up that lead and fought for a win. Again with Mumpton serving, the Saints went on a 5-0 run for a 22-14 lead. Siena took the fourth and final set 25-15.

Briana Flagg notched a double-double with a match-high 16 kills and 10 digs. Annie Stock added 11 kills for the Saints. Kalehua Katagiri recorded 22 digs, while Bobbi Lin Kalama tallied 12. Haley Howell dished out a team-high 41 assists. Sonja Vasovic, Howell and Julia Mumpton each recorded two service aces for the Saints.

The Saints continue their four-match homestand on Sunday, Sept. 18th when they host Canisius. First serve is set for 1 PM.
