LOUDONVILLE, NY - Siena Volleyball closed the MAAC opening weekend with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-20) victory over Canisius. The Saints have now won nine of the last 11 meetings.
After a quick exchange of points, the Saints (3-9, 2-0 MAAC) took a 7-3 advantage. The Golden Griffins (2-9, 0-2 MAAC) tried to cut the lead, but Siena kept adding points to the scoreboard. After a 4-0 run the Saints had a 20-11 lead over Canisius. Siena took the first set 25-14.
Using the momentum from the first set, Siena went on a 5-0 run to start the second set. It would be a lead they would never give up as they continued to dominate. The Saints fought hard to keep their advantage and took the second set 25-19.
After taking a 6-3 lead in the third set, Canisius came back and tied the set up 8-8. The Golden Griffins took their first lead in the match going up 9-8. The Griffs continued to hold a lead over Siena and was up 15-14. The Saints would not stop and they took the next six points off of four kills from Briana Flagg and Sonja Vasovic and two attack errors by the Griffs to regain the lead 20-15. Siena took the third set 25-20.
Vasovic notched a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Flagg recorded a match-high 16 kills, while Annie Stocked added 11. Haley Howell dished out a match-high 38 assists, while Kalehua Katagiri recorded 14 digs.
Siena continues their four-match homestand on Wednesday, Sept. 21 as they host Quinnipiac. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
