Siena's Top-10 Moments of 2016: Moment #9

Jan. 3, 2017 As we begin 2017, we take a look back at the Top-10 Siena Athletics Moments of 2016. We continue our countdown today with Moment #9.

The Moment
Sept. 28 - Madison Vasquez scored the game-tying goal with just 17 seconds remaining in regulation, and Gabby Albano netted the game-winning golden goal just 1:55 later in overtime as women's soccer stunned MAAC rival Marist 2-1 in Poughkeepsie.

Tara Sobierajski, who would go on to break the program's career assist record later in the season, quickly lined up a free kick from 40 yards out which she blasted off the crossbar with the final seconds ticking down. The ball bounced straight down to an unmarked Vasquez who was all alone on the doorstep to put in the rebound.

And just 98 seconds into overtime, the Saints would complete the improbable comeback as Meghan Riccardi sent a cross in front to Albano who headed in the winner off the keeper. The victory was Siena's second straight 2-1 overtime MAAC road triumph, as the Saints had posted an equally thrilling victory at Fairfield just four days earlier.

Remarkably, it was the third time during the 2016 season in which Siena scored the game-tying goal in the final three minutes of regulation. On Aug. 31, Kelsey Horst scored the game-tying goal with 2:10 remaining in regulation in a tie at Lafayette, and on Sept. 9 Vasquez netted the tying tally with 52 seconds remaining to forge a draw at Vermont. In 2015, the clutch Vasquez also scored the game-winner with just 15.4 seconds left in the Saints' 3-2 win over the Catamounts in Loudonville.

The win was Siena's fourth in a row during what would ultimately be a key five-match winning streak during the middle of the season. The victory also helped the Saints to a 4-0 start in MAAC play, matching the best conference start in program history (2014).

Fueled by their mid-season dramatics, the defending MAAC Champions would go on to finish second in the league as their seven regular season conference wins tied for the most in program history.
