As we begin 2017, we take a look back at the Top-10 Siena Athletics Moments of 2016. We continue our countdown today with Moment #6.
The Moment
Apr. 9 - Siena Baseball Head Coach Tony Rossi recorded a major personal milestone in the Saints' 3-2 win over Quinnipiac in the first game of a doubleheader at Siena Field. Siena's veteran skipper secured his 832nd career victory to surpass former Canisius Softball coach Mike Rappl to become the winningest coach in any sport in MAAC history.
Buoyed by their Game One victory over the Bobcats, the Saints would go on to capture the series en route to winning their final seven conference series of the season to secure the No. 2 seed in the MAAC Tournament. Rossi piloted Siena to 25 wins and a stellar 16-8 conference record last spring, while leading the Saints to the MAAC Championship Series for the fourth year in a row and fifth time in six seasons.
Following the departure of longtime Texas coach Augie Garrido following the conclusion of the 2016 season, Rossi will enter this spring as both the longest active tenured Division I head coach in the nation, and longest active tenured head coach at the same institution in any Division I sport. Set to begin his 48th season at Siena's helm next month, Rossi has accumulated 849 career victories.
