Volleyball Clipped at Marist

Nicic and Deobler Lead Offense in Match

The Siena volleyball team began their second round of matchups around the league, as they faced the Marist Red Foxes for the second time this season. The Saints were bested in Poughkeepsie, as the Red Foxes took the match by a final score of 3-0 (25-10, 25-20, 25-21).

Senior Katarina Nicic and sophomore Nicole Deobler paced the Siena (1-19, 0-9 MAAC) offense with five kills apiece, while sophomore Dakota Jackson added four. JoJo Ishida led the defensive game with eight digs, while Jessica Eblin and Justine Torre each tossed out seven assists.

For Marist (11-9, 8-2 MAAC), Sarah Austin put up a match-high 11 kills to lead the offense for the Red Foxes. Lauren Waide chipped in with seven kills, while Taylor Van Der Biezen facilitated the offense with a match-high 24 assists. Van Der Biezen also added eight digs to lead the team, as libero Morgan Owens also had eight digs as well.

"It's tough watching the team's frustration as we continue to grow," said head coach Vilis Ozols. "Every athlete on the team knows we're capable of so much more and we'll continue to develop and evolve our way out of this rough patch."

Marist took off running in the first set, as they jumped out to a 14-2 lead. The Saints continued to struggle in the set, as they dropped it decidedly, 25-10.

The Saints would be strong in the second set, playing to a 9-9 tie through the first 18 points. Marist would gain a slight advantage through the remaining points of the set, as the Saints kept pace but couldn't take a lead. The Red Foxes would take the 25-20 win, giving them a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third and final set would be the strongest from Siena, despite them falling 14-4 early in the set. With the Red Foxes on the verge of sticking in the dagger, the Saints came back and tied the set at 21-21. Deobler, who notched three kills over the final 5-0 run to tie things up. However, Marist grabbed the final four points to take the 25-21 win, and the 3-0 victory.

The Saints return to the floor tomorrow, Sunday, October 14 when they head to Lowell, MA to take on the Riverhawks of UMass-Lowell. First serve goes up at 1 p.m.
