UMass Lowell Tops Volleyball in Four

Saints Fall In Non-Conference Battle

Sophomore Nicole Deobler collected her fourth multi-kill match, as the put up 12 in the Siena Saints 3-1 loss at UMass Lowell on Sunday afternoon. The Riverhawks were led by Kate Bilyeu, who had the best of three multi-kill efforts for UMass Lowell with a match-high 14 kills.

Backing up Deobler's big match for Siena (1-20) was fellow classmate Brooke Rogers. She hit .267 with eight kills and three blocks to compliment the offense of Deobler. Sophomore JoJo Ishida led the defense with 11 digs, while senior Julia Burzynski also had a big game with 23 receives and only one error. Sophomore Jessica Eblin tossed out 24 assists, and junior Justine Torre added 11 assists.

For UMass Lowell (3-17), Malia Randolph backed up Bilyeu's match with a double-double with 12 kills and 26 assists. Lade Adeniyi smacked home 10 kills as well, with McKenzie Bova tying Rudolph's mark with 26 assists. Lindsey Visvardis collected a team-high 13 digs.

"It was good to see the team competing and battling today," said head coach Vilis Ozols. "We had a couple of great performances from Naesha Kelly and JoJo, and that bodes well for the future."

The Saints trailed for much of the first set, however they were able to play to a one point deficit at 8-7. Then the Riverhawks took off, jumping out to a 15-10 lead with help to a 4-0 run in the mix. UMass Lowell would use that momentum, and take a 25-14 win to go up 1-0.

It would be Siena pacing the play in the second set, as the Saints leaned on Deobler and Rogers. The pair would combine for 12 kills in the second set to help the Saints to a 22-21 lead late in the set. Thanks to one of those kills by Rogers, Siena would come to set point at 24-22. However, the Riverhawks came back with three straight points and put themselves one point away from winning at 25-24. But a clutch kill from junior Justine Torre tied things back up at 25-25, and set up a 3-0 run from the Saints thanks to a kill by Deobler and block by Deobler and junior Kelly Chaney to back up Torre's kill to give the Saints the 27-25 set two win. That victory would tie the match at 1-1.

It would be all Riverhawks in the third and fourth set, as UMass Lowell was able to score in bunches to extend out leads that the Saints could not overcome. UMass Lowell took the third set 25-18, and closed the fourth set 25-16 to seal the win 3-1.

The Saints return to the floor Wednesday, October 17 when they return home to the ARC to face Quinnipiac. First serve goes up at 6 p.m.
