The Siena Women's Tennis team used a clutch final point in doubles play to take their opening head-to-head match of the season with a 4-3 victory over the University of California-Irvine on Saturday afternoon.
In doubles play, Siena took courts 1 and 3 to take a 1-0 lead into singles play. It would be wins from the pairings of Megan Brown and
Kylie Mullaney, along with
Anessa Leyva and Anne Phillips who helped clinch the all-important fourth point of the match.
In singles, Siena kept it going with Brown taking a point for the Saints second point of the day. Then Leyva and
Juliana Goehner grabbed straight set wins on courts 6 and 5 to go up 4-0 before UC Irvine would take the next three points. Leyva's win would be the clinching point, as she would take a 6-4, 6-1 win.
"Today was a good start to our dual match schedule," said head coach
Jeff Osborn. "I believe winning the doubles point was crucial to winning the match today, as it was a good win against a strong UC Irvine team. Today's match will help us get ready for some tough matches ahead."
The Saints return to the court tomorrow, October 7 when they travel to Rider for their first MAAC matchup of the year. Matches kick off at 1 p.m.
