Volleyball Looks For Magic At 2018 MAAC Championship

The Saints Look To Continue Strong Performances At The Wide World Of Sports Complex

After concluding the 2018 regular season on a high note, Siena Volleyball now prepares to take part in the 2018 MAAC Championship Tournament at the HP Field House inside the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, FL.

Entering the three-day event as No. 10 seed, the Saints will begin the single-elimination tournament against No. 3 Rider on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 10:00 a.m. The winner of the first round matchup will advance to Friday's quarterfinal action and face the winner of No. 5 Marist and No. 8 Saint Peter's, who will play later that evening.

All four games on Friday and the championship game on Saturday will air on ESPN3 from the HP Field House. Games on Friday are scheduled for 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 5 p.m., and 7:30 p.m. The championship game will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The 2018 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament Champion will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship bracket will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 8:30 p.m. EST on ESPNU.

Making its 24th appearance and first in two seasons in the league's postseason tournament, the Saints enter the Sunshine State showdown as the second-most decorated program in MAAC history, with nine conference championships to their name. The team captured two of its titles in Lake Buena Vista, sweeping the competition as the No. 2 seed in both 2006 & 2014 to earn NCAA Tournament berths.
 
Siena last appeared in the MAAC Tournament in 2016, Playing as the No. 5 seed in Fairfield, CT. The Saints took down No. 4 Rider in straight sets before succumbing to host and Regular Season Champion #1 Fairfield, 3-1, in the semifinal round. With each MAAC squad included in postseason action every four years as part of the league's partnerships with the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, The Saints will aim to be the first No. 10 seed since Rider in 2010 to win a postseason match.
 
League Outlook:
 
Iona enters the 2018 postseason tournament as the No. 1 seed, after capturing its first-ever outright MAAC Regular Season Championship, thanks to a 16-2 league record, which was paced by a 12-game league winning streak. Despite being predicted to finish eighth in the 2018 Preseason Poll, Canisius capped on the year with its most league wins since 2006 (14), earning the No. 2 seed for its highest placement since 1990. The No. 4 Stags of Fairfield travel to Florida as three-time defending tournament champions, capping off their 23rd-straight winning season in a row.  
 
The Series With Rider (Siena leads, 28-9):
 
Entering their third postseason meeting with the rival Broncs, Siena will look to capture its first set of the year against the No. 3 team in the tournament, having been swept in both regular season matchups. The Saints' last victory over Rider came on Oct. 29, 2017, a 3-1 home win that featured a double-double comprised of 18 kills & 22 digs from then-junior Antonija Ivanovic. Despite having gone winless in six sets this season, the Green and Gold took their MAAC foes down to the wire in set two of the teams' second matchup,  losing by a narrow 25-23 result. Sophomore Nicole Deobler steadied the Saints offensively in both contests, recording nine and eight kills, respectively.
 
Scouting Siena (4-27, 2-16)
 
Siena concluded its 2018 regular season slate by winning two of its last five and three of its last six matches after beginning the year 1-23. The Saints won at least won set in five matches down the stretch, outlasting NJIT, 3-2, on Oct. 31, and erasing Manhattan in straight sets on Nov. 10. The team laid down at least 30 kills in each of its final eight contests, including 57 in a win over Saint Peter's on Oct. 27 and 50 at Quinnipiac on Nov. 4, good for two of the top-3 offensive performances on the year.
 
Filled with young, up-and-coming talent the, Saints are led offensively by Doebler, who steadied the squad in kills (224), kills per-set (2.36), total attack (760) and service aces (29) on the season. Appearing in 26 of 31 regular season matches, sophomore setter Jessica Eblin has aided the team's scoring initiative with 618 assists for an average of 6.57 per-set. Sophomore libero Jojo Ishida leads the team in digs (392), averaging 3.56 per-set and 3.73 in conference play, ranking seventh in the MAAC in the latter. Sophomore Brooke Rogers provided a team-best 64 blocks this year, for an average of 0.63 per-set, ranking fifth among the MAAC in conference play with a .313 hitting percentage.
 
Scouting Rider (17-10, 12-6)
 
Entering the championship tournament as the No. 3 seed, the Lawrenceville, NJ-based Broncs finished third in league play after being picked sixth in the MAAC Preseason Poll. The team wrapped up regular season action by winning nine of their last 10 matches, including head coach Chris Feliciano's program-record 113th victory, making him the winningest coach in Rider volleyball history. The team enters postseason play as the league's leader in blocks per-set (2.18) and opponent hitting percentage (.162), ranking 27th nationally in the latter. The Broncs are also one of four MAAC squads to sit in the top-40 nationally in aces per-set, ranking 38th with 1.50.
 
Rider boasts three players who have received MAAC weekly honors this season, including two-time defending Rookie of the Week Anilee Sher, who has received the award four times overall throughout the year. The freshman setter leads the team with 933 assists, ranking second in the MAAC in service aces per-set (0.46) and fifth in assists (9.62). The Broncs are led offensively by senior Hailey Reide, whose 275 kills are a team-best. Leading the team in digs (501) and averaging the second-most in the league per-set (4.82), junior Rachelle Runyon has captured MAAC Libero of the Week in each of the last two awards cycles, while sophomore Meredith Pellegrino was named the MAAC Player of the Week on Oct. 23, leading the team to a pair of wins that week with an average of 4.43 kills per-set.

Going one-and-done in each of the previous four tournaments, Rider is in search of its first MAAC Tournament victory since 2010, when it advanced to the second round as the No. 10 seed. The Broncs have never played in a tournament championship match, advancing as far as the semifinal round in 2004.
