Julia Kallen paced the Fairfield Stags with 19 kills and 12 digs on the day for a double-double, as the Siena Saints fell to the Stags by a final score of 3-1 (17-25, 25-17, 15-25, 13-25).
Sophomore
Nicole Deobler led the offense with nine kills, while classmate
Dakota Jackson chipped in with eight kills. Sophomore JoJo Ishida paced the defense with 18 digs, with senior
Antonija Ivanovic adding 10 digs for the Saints (3-25, 1-14 MAAC).
Jessica Eblin tossed out 26 assists in the match, while
Brooke Rogers and
Katarina Nicic were also a big part of the offense. As a team, the Saints hit .045 over the four sets.
For Fairfield (11-13, 10-5 MAAC), Sonja Radulovic backed up Kallen's 19 kills with 13 of her own as well as adding 14 digs. With the pair each collecting a double-double, the duo accounted for over 60 percent of their scoring. Mayda Garcia also added nine kills, as setter Alexis Rich facilitated the offense with 51 assists. Taylor Rudeen led the defense with 20 digs.
"It looked like we would have an opportunity to compete well today and we showed sparks of effectiveness," said head coach
Vilis Ozols. "Our hitting percentage hurt us today but even with that we had our chances."
The first set started slow for the Saints, as a 4-0 run midway through the set gave the Stags a 15-8 lead. The green and gold would fight their way back, pulling within three points at 19-16. But a 6-1 run ended the set in favor of Fairfield, and the Stags took a 1-0 lead.
Siena would tie things up after the second set, as the Saints held a lead from start to finish. Fairfield stayed within striking distance for much of the set, as both teams scored in spurts. With the score 20-17 in favor of Siena, the Saints used a 5-0 run that featured kills from Nicic and Deobler to wrap up the set and tie things up at 1-1.
Sets three and four wouldn't go as planned for the Saints, as they would drop both to drop the match. Fairfield used an 8-0 run in each set to break things open, setting up victories in each set to take the match 3-1.
The Saints return to action this tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 4 when they head to Quinnipiac to take on the Bobcats. First serve is slated to go up at 1 p.m.
