Katarina Nicic put up a season-high 13 kills on Sunday afternoon, but the Siena volleyball team fell to the Quinnipiac Bobcats by a final score of 3-1 (26-28, 29-27, 24-26, 13-25). The Saints and Bobcats played the first three sets into extra points.
Siena (3-26, 1-15), backed up Nicic's effort with double-digit kill performances from sophomores
Dakota Jackson and
Brooke Rogers. Both the second year players collected 11 kills, while
Jessica Eblin passed around 39 assists on the afternoon. Sophomore JoJo Ishida had a solid defensive day, putting up 17 digs. Rogers would hit .476, while Nicic had a season-high .345 attack percentage.
For Quinnipiac (7-19, 6-9 MAAC), Kat Miller sent home a match-high 25 kills in the win for the Bobcats, also collecting 13 digs for a double-double. Not to be outdone, teammates Morgan Sherwin and Kaleigh Oates each had 14 kills to add to the 72 total kills on the match. Setter Marisa Pansari had 59 assists, while Alejandra Rodriguez had a team-high 15 digs.
"Even with the loss, that was one of our best execution matches all season," said head coach
Vilis Ozols. "Brooke, Kat, and Dakota all had outstanding matches that were facilitated by Jess running the offense really well."
Siena opened the first set strong, as they got out to a 14-9 lead early. But, a 6-0 run by Quinnipiac let them back in the set, and both sides traded barbs down the stretch. With the Saints holding a 24-22 lead, a 3-0 run by Quinnipiac put the Bobcats within one point of taking the set. Both teams would then trade points through extra rallies, with Quinnipiac coming out on top to open the match up 1-0.
The Saints bounced back in the second set, once again topping Quinnipiac over midway through by a score of 19-13. However, the Bobcats would crawl their way back once again, cutting the lead to two points at 20-18 before Siena came within a point of victory at 24-19. Needing a five-point run, Quinnipiac would get just that, tying the set at 24-24 and snagging a point to take a 25-24 lead. But Siena didn't quit, as a clutch kill from
Nicole Deobler kept things going. With the score at 27-27, it would finally be Nicic with back-to-back kills to end the set and tie the match up at 1-1.
As it appeared the Saints were going to take a 2-1 lead in the match as they led 23-20 in the third set, Quinnipiac came back for a third straight set. The Bobcats would score six of the next seven points in the set to take a 26-24 win, before commandingly winning set four with a 15-2 run midway for a 25-13 win to take the match 3-1.
The Saints return to the floor Saturday, Nov. 10 when they head to Manhattan for the final weekend in MAAC regular season play. First serve is set to go up at 1 p.m.
