With just over three minutes remaining in the game, Keenan Cook tallied his first collegiate hat-trick and handed the Saints the game-winning goal to defeat Hobart 12-11 for their first season opening victory since they last played the Statesmen in the season opener in 2012.

Mike Reilly led Siena (1-0) with five points coming off his second collegiate hat-trick and two assists. MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Chris Robertson also tallied a hat-trick and extended his goal-scoring streak to 15 games. Freshman goalie Anthony Tebbano stopped 17 in his collegiate debut.

Eric Holden recorded six points for Hobart (0-2) coming off of four goals and two assists. Ryan Archer tallied a hat-trick on his 10 shots taken. The Statesmen would cause 10 turnovers in the contest, with Archer, Sam Mueller and Christopher Willma recorded two a piece.

Regardless of being a man-down, Reilly tallied the Saints first goal of the season to put Siena up 1-0 early. Siena then rallied back down 2-1 to take a 3-2 lead after the first period played. The Saints then scored four-straight goals coming into the second period, with Jake Shapiro at the faceoff X. Shapiro would go nine-for-26 at the faceoff X on the game. The Saints led 7-2 early in the second period. Freshman Nick Pepe would tally his first collegiate goal to give the Saints a six-goal lead, 8-2. The Statesmen would rally back to trail 8-5 at the half.

Siena continued to hold an advantage over the Statesmen with the Saints recording the first three goals of the third period, 11-6. However, Hobart would begin their comeback and outscore Siena 4-3 in the frame to trail just 11-9 with one final period to play.

The Statesmen, who were picked second in the NEC Preseason Poll, tied the game up with two quick goals early in the final frame. It then became a game of defense, where neither team would allow the other to score. With just over three minutes left, Siena called a timeout. Cook then tallied his third and game-winning goal with an assist from Reilly to put Siena up 12-11. In the final three minutes, Hobart recorded five shots with Tebbano tallying one save and one of the shots by Hancock hitting the post but the Saints were able to hold on and take the victory 12-11.

The Saints were outshot 60-25 by the Statesmen but Hobart tallied just one save in the contest. Jack Drillock and Tommy Pulzello each recorded a caused turnover, while Drillock and Tebbano led the Saints with five ground balls.

Siena will host UMass Lowell in their home opener on Saturday, February 24 at 1 p.m.
