LOUDONVILLE, NY – With a win in the first set in the books, the Siena Saints looked poised for their first league win this season. However, three straight set wins by the Marist Red Foxes would down the Saints by a score of 3-1. Marist's Niki DeSerpa led all players on the match with 15 total kills for the Red Foxes.
Senior
Antonija Ivanovic, and sophomores
Nicole Deobler and
Dakota Jackson each rounded up eight kills on the match to lead the Saints. Sophomore
Brooke Rogers piled up four as the second-highest total for Siena. Defensively, the Saints were strong at the net, collecting five team blocks on the night. Sophomore
Jessica Eblin tossed out 26 assists while classmate JoJo Ishida netted a team-high 12 digs.
For Marist (6-7, 3-0 MAAC), Sarah Austin and Megan Fergus each smacked 12 kills to complement DeSerpa's total. The most important number for the Red Foxes, however, was Stephanie Stone putting up eight kills while hitting a match-high .727. Taylor Van Der Biezen passed around 47 assists and tied for the team-lead in digs with 11 for a double-double.
"I was really proud of the way the team battled tonight," said head coach
Vilis Ozols. "At times when we were in system and doing things that we've trained so hard at, they showed some awesome results. Our goal will be to keep building on that and to have that be the standard throughout our games."
Set one would belong to Siena (1-12, 0-3 MAAC) as they came out strong, spinning off a 6-0 run to take a 15-10 lead midway through the set. The Saints took advantage of multiple Marist errors early, while Jackson and Deobler collected kills down the stretch. Capped by rocket from Deobler to end the set, the Saints would go up 1-0 with a 25-20 win.
The next two sets would fall heavily in favor of the Red Foxes, as they woke up and took a pair of set wins by a combined margin of 24 points. In set two, it would be a pair of 6-0 runs that fueled Marist to a 25-14 set win, as the Red Foxes hit .500 as a team during the frame. That was followed by a commanding 25-10 win in set three, as Fergus collected three of her kills in the set.
Siena would not go down without a fight, as they kicked back into gear for the fourth set. The Saints and Red Foxes went toe to toe through the set, as the biggest lead would be only three points. Siena would battle, pulling even at 19-19 after three points in a row knotted things up. But Marist would step up, as they managed to get five of the last eight points to take the set and the match, with Austin collecting the game-winning kill.
The Saints return to the floor this Sunday, Sept. 23 when they stay within a stone's throw of home and face UAlbany on the road. First set is set to go up at 2 p.m.
