Volleyball Drops Crosstown Matchup at UAlbany

Saints Fall in Straight Sets Against Great Danes

Grace Cozad led all players with 13 kills on the afternoon, as the University of Albany Great Danes topped the Siena Saints by a final score of 3-0 in volleyball action Sunday.

Cozad was backed up with a strong performance from Danielle Tedesco, who hit .727 with eight kills on the match. Nicole Otero collected a match-high 25 digs for the Great Danes (6-7), and Andersen Vaughan tossed out 39 assists.

For the Saints (1-13), junior Nicole Deobler jumped ahead on offense as she caught fire after the first set, collecting a team-high eight kills with 11 digs. Senior Antonija Ivano vic and freshman Abby Huffman each smacked three kills to the floor as the second-highest totals on the team. Sophomore JoJo Ishida put up 13 digs to lead the team, while junior Justine Torre tossed out 17 assists. Siena did not hold a lead in the match, as they had more errors (21) than kills (20).

"The team showed a lot of resilience as we worked with some changes in our lineup," said head coach Vilis Ozols. "Albany is a very nice team with championship aspirations for their conference, and they played every bit like a champion contender today."

Albany took control right from set one, winning 10 of the first 12 points of the match to take an early lead. After Siena took three points in a row to cut down the lead, Albany jumped back out to a 19-5 lead with a 9-0 run. The margin would be too large for the Saints, as the Great Danes would take the set 25-13.

Siena fell behind early once again in sets two and three, with Albany jumping out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a kill from Cozad and a pair of attack errors from the Saints in the second set. The Saints just couldn't get going on offense, while Albany was able to capitalize on open floor and Siena mistakes. They would win the second set 25-15, and closed things out by talking set three 25-9.

The Saints will return to the court next Saturday, Sept. 29, when they open a MAAC weekend in New Jersey playing Rider. First serve will go up at 4 p.m.
