Taking advantage of 24 total Siena errors, the Rider Broncs were able to take a 3-0 (25-10, 25-17, 25-14) victory over the Saints Saturday evening. Leading the way for the Broncs was Savannah Logan, who collected nine kills on offense.
Sophomore
Nicole Deobler tied for the match lead with a high of nine kills over the three sets. The next highest kill total belonged to freshman
Maddy Dunigan, who put up four kills for the Saints. Sophomore JoJo Ishida was the leader defensively, putting up a team-high 10 digs. Siena struggled offensively, hitting a combined. 095.
For Rider (7-5, 3-2 MAAC), Savannah Logan matched Deobler's mark with nine kills on the match as well. Hailey Riede collected seven kills, while defensively Rachelle Runyon put together a match-high 19 digs. Delaney St. Pierre ran the offense, tossing out 28 assists over the three sets. As a team, the Broncs hit a combined .307 in the win.
"This was a tough match for the team," said head coach
Vilis Ozols. "We've been struggling with both skill consistency and positional discipline. When we did manage those, we did have good stretches of productivity."
Things started slow for the Saints, as they fell behind early with a 25-10 loss in the first set. Rider would use an 8-0 run midway through to take a commanding 18-5 lead. Multiple Siena mistakes and well placed kills clinched the set for Rider, sending them to the second set with a 1-0 lead.
Set two would be the best output from the Saints, as a pair of kills from Deobler and one from freshman
Abby Huffman aided an early 6-1 lead for Siena. However, Rider would climb back in, and with the score 9-7, the Broncs would turn in a 9-0 run to swing a 16-9 lead. Both teams would trade barbs down the stretch in the set, but the deficit was too large as they dropped the set 25-17 to give Rider the 2-0 lead.
The dagger would come in set three, despite Siena playing tough to open the set. With the Saints only trailing 12-9 midway through, a 7-0 run by Rider turned into a 19-9 Broncs lead. That would lead to an exchange of points through the final rallies, giving Rider a 25-14 set win, sweeping three sets to take the match win.
The Saints return to the floor tomorrow, Sunday September 30 when they head to Saint Peter's for their second MAAC road match of the season. First serve in Jersey City, NJ will go up at 1 p.m.
