Saints Block Saint Peter’s in Victory

Sims Ties Program Record For Blocks In a Game

LOUDONVILLE - Junior Maddie Sims found her groove on the defensive end on Sunday afternoon, as the Mount Laurel, NJ native tied a program single game record for blocks with seven, leading Siena to 10 blocks in the game. That aided the Siena Saints to a 50-46 victory over the Saint Peter's Peacocks on Sunday afternoon in the ARC.

In the victory, the Saints also held the Peacocks to a season-low total en route to their 18th straight victory over Saint Peter's. It was also the lowest total the Saints have allowed in a single game since Feb. 25, 2018, which was also a victory over Saint Peter's in the ARC. Siena won that game 70-36.

Sims came a single rebound away from a double double, as her final line ended with 12 points, nine rebounds, and seven blocks. Junior Sabrina Piper led the way in points, as she also almost collected a double-double with 14 points, nine rebounds, five assists, two blocks, and a steal. Redshirt senior's Aaliyah Jones and Joella Gibson also had solid games, as Jones put up 11 points and five rebounds, while Gibson added eight points and seven rebounds.

Saint Peter was led by D'Aviyon Magazine, who tossed in 11 points on 3-for-9 scoring from behind the arc. Zoe Pero added 10 points and seven rebounds, while Wil'lisha Jackson almost notched a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Briyanah Richardson was held to nine points, but tossed out a game-high six assists.

Siena struggled out of the gate, as they fell on just one field goal in the first quarter. That allowed the Peacocks to take a 14-5 lead early through the first 10 minutes. The second quarter brought more luck, as the Saints began to score the basketball and locked down on defense. Piper picked up the pace on offense, hitting a pair of threes to keep Siena in the game and down only a pair going into the half, 25-23.

The Green and Gold came out after the half, as Sims knocked down back-to-back layups to but Siena up by a pair. From there, Siena would not relinquish the lead until the 2:21 mark to go in the fourth quarter. While the Saints played well on defense, the score remained close through the fourth. Saint Peter's would tie the game with 7:59 left on the clock after Pero knocked in a pair of free throws. It would get knotted by once again with 2:04 to play as Pero evened things up at 46-46.

Siena's defense, led by Sims down the stretch, held Saint Peter's scoreless over the final 2:04 to secure the victory. It would be free throws that would lock things up, as Aaliyah Jones knocked down a pair with 12 seconds remaining to get the job done.

Siena outscored Saint Peter's 26-16 in the paint, while Saint Peter's topped the Green and Gold in points off turnovers, second chance points, fast break, and bench points.

The Saints return to the floor for their third game in five days as they head to Fairfield on Tuesday evening. Tip-off for the matchup with the Stags is set for 7 p.m.
