Aaliyah Jones did all she could to help aid the Siena Saints, as she knocked down six three pointers en route to a career-high 22 points. With the Saints trailing by as much as nine points with 52 seconds remaining, she kicked it into gear as Siena came a possession away from a huge come from behind win, falling to the Fairfield Stags 59-55.
The Saints (9-11, 5-4) shot 61.5 percent from the floor in the final quarter, going 8-of-13 from the floor, which included going 7-for-11 from behind the arc. Siena's 12 makes from distance marks the most three-pointers made in a game all season.
Jones' new career high led all scorers between the two sides, as she added in a team-high three steals and a trio of rebounds. Junior
Sabrina Piper added 15 points and six assists, while
Deja Rawls exploded for seven assists to put her in sole possession of 15
th on Siena's all-time assists list.
Fairfield (5-14, 2-6) was led by a Khadidiatou Diouf 15 point, seven rebound night to lead the Stags. Katie Armstrong tossed in 13 points, along with 12 points from Lou Lopez-Senechal. Casey Foley led Fairfield in both rebounds and assists, as she collected nine rebounds and six assists.
The Saints struggled to get offense in the first half, but used their defense to keep things close after the first 10 minutes of play. Piper would be a bright spot, hitting a pair of shots to keep the Saints within striking distance. However, Fairfield would pick things up on their offensive end in the second half, using a 13-3 run to end the half and keep the Saints scoreless over the final five minutes of the second quarter to jump out to a 28-17 lead at the half.
Siena outscored Fairfield in the third quarter 14-10, as a double-digit lead for Fairfield shrunk back to single digits by the end of the third quarter. The Stags would hold a 38-31 lead headed into the fourth quarter, as Jones hit back-to-back three pointers to end the quarter.
Fairfield was able to stretch their lead back out to begin the fourth, as they held a 14-point lead with 3:28 to go on the clock. But that would only be the beginning for the Saints, as Piper and freshman
Amari Anthony knocked down a pair of three's on back-to-back possessions to cut the Fairfield lead back to eight with 1:25 to go. Siena would then begin to foul.
After Sam Kramer knocked down a pair of free throws, the lead would stand at nine points for the Stags with 52 seconds to go. Rawls would immediately do something about that, knocking down a three to cut the Fairfield lead to six with 47 seconds to go. Another pair of free throws from Fairfield put the lead back to eight. Siena responded once again with a three from Jones with 39 seconds to go to further rock the equilibrium scale and cut the Fairfield lead to five.
Casey Foley would go to the line for Fairfield, and missed both free throws opening the door for the Saints. They would capitalize, as it would be Piper to bring Siena within a pair of points with 24 seconds to play. Within a span of 29 seconds, the Saints would have a 9-2 run and be in the ballgame. After Piper's make, Fairfield would split their free throws to give the Saints the ball down by three with 21 seconds remaining.
However, the shot to tie would miss, and Fairfield would connect on their free throws to push the lead back to five with 13 seconds to go. Despite a three by Jones with six seconds to go, Fairfield would once again hit both free throws to bring the lead to four, ending Siena's hope at a comeback win.
The Saints return to action on Friday, Feb. 1 as the calendar rolls over. They will play host to the Marist Red Foxes on Friday, as Siena will host their 19
th annual Pink Zone game.
