Women’s Basketball Bested by Marist in Pink Zone Game

Jones Collects Another Career High In Second Straight Game

LOUDONVILLEIn front of a crowd of nearly 1,000 fans on Friday night, the Siena Saints played host to the Marist Red Foxes for their 19th annual Pink Zone game benefitting To Life! Despite the great atmosphere in the Alumni Recreation Center, the Saints could not top their I-87 rival, as they fell to the final score of 73-58.

The Saints were led by another stellar offensive performance from redshirt senior Aaliyah Jones, who topped her career-high in points – which she previously broke on Tuesday at Fairfield – with a 27 point night on 10-for-19 shooting from the field, including a 7-for-11 clip from behind the three-point line. She is the most recent Saint to hit seven three's in a game since Jackie Benitez hit seven against Syracuse in 2016. Jones also added four steals to her stat line, while junior Sabrina Piper knocked down 14 points and three assists. Senior Deja Ralws added a team-high four assists, moving her into 14th place all-time on the Siena assists leaderboard with 293 career assists.

The Green and Gold had one of their better shooting performances of the season, as the totaled 44 percent from the field in the game. They would mimic that same clip from behind the arc, as they went 10-for-25 from three as well.

Rebekah Hand, who scored a team-high 18 points and tossed out six assists, led Marist on offense. Grace Vander Weide flirted with a triple-double for the Red Foxes, as she scored nine points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and tossed out a team-high seven assists. Willow Duffell collected a double-double, scoring 15 points with 11 rebounds, while Alana Gilmer and Sarah Barcello each added 13 points as well.

Both teams came out flying on offense, as the Saints led by as many as six points midway through the first quarter. Piper was sharp early, hitting all three shots she took in the quarter. After Jones hit a jumper to put Siena up 18-12, Marist went on a 7-0 run to end the quarter, taking a slight 19-18 advantage after the first 10 minutes of play.

Siena would open up with the first two baskets of the second quarter, reclaiming the lead at 23-19 after Piper made her second three pointer of the day at the 8:15 mark. However, Marist held the Saints without a point over the next 3:16, and held the Green and Gold to just three field goals the rest of the quarter as the Red Foxes took a nine-point lead into halftime. Piper would cut it to single digits as she hit a jumper in the lane as time expired on the half.

Marist used the third quarter to build a lead and keep it, despite the Saints hitting multiple shots and Jones keeping a hot hand after scoring 18 of her 27 points in the first half. Jones and Piper helped the Saints to only trailing by 11 points going into the fourth. However, the Saints would not get back within single digits, getting as close as 10 points in the fourth.

The Red Foxes led the battle in the paint, outscoring Siena 32-22 in that category, while also topping the Saints in second chance points 18-7.

The Saints return to the floor on Sunday, Feb. 3 when they travel to face the Manhattan Jaspers. Tip-off for the game Sunday is slated for 2 p.m.
