Saints Run Out of Time in MAAC Opener

Comeback Bid Falls Short at Saint Peter’s

JERSEY CITY, NJ – Siena Basketball cut a 19-point deficit with 12 minutes remaining down to five before falling short 65-60 against Saint Peter's in the conference lid-lifter at the Yanitelli Center. Reigning MAAC Player of the Week Evan Fisher scored a game-high 23 points for the Saints which have dropped seven of their past eight MAAC road openers.

Devauhnte Turner scored 21 points and connected on each of the final three clutch field goals for Saint Peter's (4-9, 1-0) which has captured the past nine meetings between the programs in Jersey City. Samuel Idowu added 15 points for the Peacocks which shot 52% from the field including 62% in the second half.

Defending MAAC Rookie of the Week Jalen Pickett tallied 16 points and dished out eight assists and classmate Sloan Seymour contributed 12 points on four threes for Siena (5-9, 0-1) which lost despite shooting 51% from the field including an even 60% during the final stanza.

The teams exchanged back-to-back 12-0 runs during the midway portion of a wild second half. The Saint Peter's spurt pushed the Peacocks to their biggest lead of the game at 51-32 with 12:25 remaining, while the Saints immediately responded with the ensuing 12 points to rally back within 51-44 with 9:18 to play.

Siena hung around, but Turner took over down the stretch as the home team won for the 12th time in the past 13 matchups between the schools.

The Saints will look to bounce back when they return to the Capital Region to host reigning MAAC Regular Season Co-Champion Canisius Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Times Union Center. Siena has teamed up once again with Hannaford Supermarkets to host the annual food drive benefiting the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, and fans who donate at least three non-perishable food items at the game will receive a voucher good for two free tickets to a future regular season home game.
