Conway & Schanz Named Leo Dufort Student Athletes of the Month

The Senior Siena Soccer Duo Earned the Award for the Month of September

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Men's and Women's Soccer were both represented in the department's first Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month awards for the 2019-20 school year. Men's Soccer senior Eamonn Conway and women's soccer senior Haleigh Schanz were both honored for their achievements on the field and in the classroom.

A member of the Saints' back line, Conway has played in each contest this season thus far, notching a pair of assists for the Green and Golf in nine appearances. This included helps in Siena's 3-2 win over Vermont on Sept. 8 and a 3-1 triumph over Canisius to begin MAC play on Oct. 3.

A 2016 MAAC All-Rookie Team selection, Conway earned a spot on the MAAC All-Academic squad in each of the last two seasons and on the MAAC Academic Honor Roll in each of the last three. The Delmar, NY native holds a 3.71 cumulative GPA, and is set to graduate in the spring with a degree in computer science.

A member of the Saints' defense on the women's side, Schanz is serving as a co-captain for her senior season, and has played in nine contests for far this year. The Hopewell Junction, NY product led the team in minutes last season and was the only Saint to appear in and start all 22 matches, nothing three assists in the process.

A two-year MAAC All-Academic Team and three -year MAAC Academic Honor Roll member, Schanz was honored as a member of Siena's 4.0 Club for holding a perfect GPA during her freshman year. She currently holds a 3.85 cumulative GPA and will graduate in the spring with a degree in economics & business.

The Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes exemplary achievements in both academics and athletics. The late Leo Dufort received a B.S. in marketing and management from Siena in August of 1977. His entire academic career was completed on a part-time basis beginning in the spring of 1961, as a married adult while at the same time raising five children. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack while cross country skiing in February of 1993. His wife Jeanine wanted to do something to immortalize his memory. The original plaque was donated to athletics and the department began the Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award to help carry out his legacy. Dufort graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954 and was a Navy Veteran (USS Bennington) who worked for JL Hammett Co. at the time of his death.
