ALBANY, NY – Evan Fisher scored a game-high 21 points as Siena Basketball rebounded from a mini two-game skid with a 72-62 victory over Saint Peter's at the Times Union Center. CBS Sports/USBWA National Freshman of the Week
Jalen Pickett added 18 points and nine assists for the Saints which moved into in a five-way tie for second place in the MAAC Standings.
Sloan Seymour broke the program's freshman record for threes with four triples in scoring 12 points for Siena (14-14, 9-6) which moved within a half game of idle frontrunner Canisius for first place in the MAAC. Seymour entered the evening tied with Scott Knapp, who connected for 76 threes during his freshman campaign in 1997-98.
Davauhnte Turner scored all 16 of his points in the second half for Saint Peter's (6-20, 3-11) which has dropped eight straight. KC Ndefo and Quinn Taylor contributed 12 points apiece for the Peacocks which shot 52% from the field including 61% in the second half (17-28) in defeat.
Siena never trailed and led by as many as 16 points as the home team prevailed for the 13
th time in the last 14 meetings between the programs. The Saints embarked upon a 19-4 run late in the first half to open a 15-point cushion, and took a 33-21 lead into the break. Siena held Saint Peter's without an assist in the first half, while forcing the Peacocks into 10 turnovers.
The Saints kept Saint Peter's at arm's length throughout the second half, and led by double figures for most of the stanza. The Peacocks used a 6-0 flurry to rally within as close as seven at 55-48 with 7:16 to go, but Siena made its free throws down the stretch to move back to .500 overall for the season. The Saints shot 18-22 from the free throw line including 12-13 in the second half, while Saint Peter's made just 11 of 19 in the game.
Manny Camper tallied a gritty seven points, seven rebounds, and three steals for Siena which posted a 19-4 advantage in points off turnovers. The Saints turned the Peacocks over 15 times, while themselves tying a season-low in miscues for the second straight game with just four turnovers.
Siena concludes its season long four-game homestand with Senior Day Sunday against I-87 rival Marist. Game time is set for 2 p.m., with Senior Day festivities set to immediately precede the action.
