Women’s Basketball Duo Lead Siena to Win Over Canisius

Saints Defeat Golden Griffins Behind Scoring Prowess of Piper and Jones

The Siena Saints piled up 22 points in overtime with junior Sabrina Piper and redshirt senior Aaliyah Jones lit up the scoreboard for a combined 47 points in the game, as the Green and Gold defeated the Canisius Golden Griffins by a final score of 78-66.

The Saints (12-15, 8-8) were led by Piper's 26 points and six rebounds, while Jones used a 4-for-9 three-point night en route to 21 points. Senior Deja Rawls tossed in 13 points, while junior Maddie Sims scored nine points and led the team with nine rebounds and three blocks. Jones led the team with five assists, while Piper snagged three steals.

Canisius (9-17, 7-8) was led by a double-double from Sara Hinriksdottir, who tossed in all 18 of her points in the second half and grabbed 12 rebounds. D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks scored 15 for the Golden Griffins, while Danielle Sanderlin notched 13 points and nine rebounds.

Piper and Jones went to work in the first quarter, as both accounted for 16 of the Saints first 20 points. Piper knocked down four of her first five shots, while Jones nailed a three-pointer and a pair of jumpers. Siena would lead after the first 10 minutes, 20-15.

In the second quarter, Siena put up an 8-0 run in the middle minutes to pull ahead 25-18 as Jones went over double-figures. Piper would not be outdone, as she scored the Saints' final five points of the half to give the Green and Gold a 30-22 lead at the half.

The Green and Gold took a lead by 13 to start the third quarter using a 7-0 run, as Sims and Piper started the scoring. However, Canisius used their own 7-0 run to end the third quarter, holding Siena scoreless over the final 2:50 to pull back within six points.

Things stayed close over the start of the fourth quarter. Then, with 4:47 to play, Canisius took a 49-48 lead using a 9-1 run. Piper took the lead right back in the ensuing possession, as she banked a jumper off the glass to retake the lead. Both sides would trade baskets down the stretch, as Siena trailed by a bucket with under 30 seconds to play. A Canisius miss led to a rebound from Sims, who found a streaking Joella Gibson wide open up the court for a layup with 22 seconds to play. On the ensuing possession, Jones forced a turnover by snagging the ball out of the hands of Hinriksdottir. With the buzzer sounding, the Saints would miss the shot and force overtime.

In the extra session, the Saints could not miss from the floor and locked down the defense. With baskets from Piper and Jones to open the segment, it was the and-one made layup and free throw from senior Deja Rawls that made the difference and put the Saints on a springboard to the lead. Siena would hit all four shots from the field in overtime, and go 13-for-17 from the free throw line to put up 22 points in the extra five minutes to seal the victory.

The Saints return to the floor on Thursday, Feb. 28 when they head to Lawrenceville, NJ for their final road trip of the year, facing the Rider Broncs. Tip-off for the game is set for 7 p.m.
