Saints Break Out Brooms in the Bronx

Siena Basketball Wins Sixth in Seven Games, Sweeps Manhattan

RIVERDALE, NY – Red-hot Siena Basketball has won six of seven and held its 13th straight opponent to 70 points or less with a 51-49 win over Manhattan at Draddy Gymnasium. Evan Fisher scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half for the Saints which survived a half court heave at the buzzer to complete the regular season series sweep of the Jaspers.

Reserve Kadeem Smithen narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds and added three steals for Siena (12-12, 7-4) which secured its sixth true road victory to match the program's highest total since posting nine road wins during the 2009-10 season. Jalen Pickett added nine points for the Saints which emerged victorious in the milestone 100th meeting between the longtime rivals.

Tyler Reynolds scored 13 of his 18 points in the second half and added nine rebounds for Manhattan (7-17, 5-7) which had won the first three games to open its season long four-game homestand. Warren Williams scored nine points and Ebube Ebube added seven points and eight rebounds off the bench for the Jaspers.

The matchup featuring two of the nation's top-40 scoring defenses lived up to its billing. Siena shot just 25% (6-24) in the first half and misfired on all 10 of its three-point attempts, but matched Manhattan defensively to trail just 17-16 at intermission.

The Saints found their offensive touch to open the second half however, opening the stanza on a 14-3 spurt to claim a 30-20 advantage with 14:04 to go. Siena ultimately led by as many as 14 at 43-29 with 6:59 remaining.

But the pesky Jaspers slowly chipped away and mounted an 18-6 run to rally all the way back within two on an Ebube second chance finish to cut the Saints' lead to 49-47 with 12 seconds left. Following a pair of Pickett free throws and a Nehemiah Mack basket, Pickett headed back to the free throw line for a one-and-one with 3.9 seconds to go. Pickett missed the front end, but Mack's desperation heave sailed wide left as Siena hung on to earn just its second win in its last nine trips to Riverdale.

The Saints – who entered play forcing just 10.9 turnovers per game which ranked 23rd fewest nationally – turned Manhattan over 16 times to fuel an 18-8 advantage in points off turnovers. Meanwhile, Siena committed just eight turnovers against the vaunted Jaspers' pressure to claim just the fourth win by the road team in the last 20 meetings between the programs. Overall, the Saints totaled just 14 miscues in the sweep of Manhattan who entered the day ranked 40th nationally averaging 15.7 turnovers forced.

Winners of four of their last five road games, Siena concludes a stretch where it plays four of five away from home when they travel to MAAC preseason favorite Rider Sunday at 2 p.m. for their final road game of February. The Saints and Broncs will enter the 2 p.m. tip-off in a four-way tie for second place in the conference standings, with the potential to move into the top spot by the end of the weekend.
